THE OVERLOOKED SCENARIO
Recently, I found myself in the process of preparing for a standardized test and I wanted to simulate the actual test conditions. This meant having an abundance of practice tests and a good timer. Well, since my phone is a Motoroal RAZR V3t which is Java-enabled, why couldn't I just download and install a countdown/timer app to the phone? After researching online, I was able to find a bunch of free apps, but the installation process on my phone did not seem simple at all. There were even some web sites that claimed no apps could be installed on the V3t. Also, even though I work in the tech industry, I do not have Internet access on my phone. So I did not want to go through all the trouble and expense of having my phone web-enabled.
Well, in the interest of the common good I stumbled upon the following way to install an app onto my phone, both quckly and painlessly. I have Windows 2000 running and I am able to connect to my phone via Bluetooth. USB should work fine, as well.
THE SOLUTION
- Connect to your phone using your preferred method (Bluetooth/USB). You should be able to browse the folders on the phone via Windows Explorer.
- Try to locate the folder representing your memory card. It might be something like "MMC" under the phone directories. In my case with a Bluetooth connection, I went to "My Bluetooth Places"\"Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood"\"Motorola V3t"\"OBEX File Transfer"\MMC(Removable)\mobile.
- Create a new folder called "KJAVA"
- Copy the .jar to the above directory.
- On phone: Go to Games & Apps->Install New
- Select application. The new app should be listed.
- Select storage device (Memory Card in my case)
- Select Yes to warning. Your phone may not display a warning about the software not being signed/verified.
- Application is now installed. You should be able to run it from the Games & App menu on your phone
